Global Education

Global participation in education over time

Are more people attending school around the world than 10 years ago? At what levels? How does participation vary across nations? At what rates are students completing their degrees?

The objective of this project is to provide easy visualization of key variables extracted from UNESCO's vast data base.

The graphs on this page represent Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) for pre-primary, primary, secondary and tertiary education. GER is the number of enrolled students as a percentage of the number of people in the designated age group for that level of education. (GER can exceed 100%, because some enrolled students may be outside the designated age group for that level.)

For illustration, we show data from the 10 most populous countries.

(Note: Brazil has not provided GER data to UNESCO, but is included in the graph legend anyway because it is among the 10 most populous nations.)
